What is conceptual design? And how to wrap your mind around ideation

concept of design

Graphic design concepts refer to design solutions that focus on visuals. They’re often used to create logos, websites, user interfaces and other assets that emphasize visual design. When developing graphic design concepts, designers should consider trends, brand identity and the preference of their target audience. Visual skills are crucial for effective design, enabling clear communication, intuitive user interactions, and aesthetically pleasing outcomes.

How to Learn the Basics of Design

Knowledge acquired in the latter stages of the process can inform repeats of earlier stages. Information is continually used to inform the understanding of the problem and solution spaces, and to redefine the problem itself. In the “Implement” phase, the team brings these ideas to life through prototypes. The team tests, iterates and refines these ideas based on user feedback. This stage is crucial for translating abstract concepts into tangible, viable products, services, or experiences.

How to effectively communicate your design concepts

Once you start thinking about it bit more and add more details by making a line drawing or put it in a simple story, you are essentially adding another dimension to it (1D). So, a concept is not a wireframe or mock, or even a visual representation of something. The concept is an idea that doesn’t have any dimension; in other words, it is zero-dimensional (0D). A product without a strong concept is like a human without a soul. Speed up creating your how-to guides, training documentation, and interactive product demos with the...

Principle of Consistency and Standards in User Interface Design

The context in which the product is being used can significantly impact a user's interaction with the interface. For example, a user in a library or on a phone call may have different needs and limitations to consider in the design. Iterative development reduces the risk of critical mistakes and ensures that the product meets the users' needs. This approach allows developers to focus on minor, manageable improvements that can be implemented quickly and efficiently.

Frequently asked questions about principles of design

In such cases, designers may need to collaborate with developers to create a solution that addresses the user's problem. This underscores the importance of effective communication and teamwork in the design process. To create successful designs, a design team must understand the essential needs of their users. The design thinking process should not be seen as a concrete and inflexible approach to design; the component stages identified should serve as a guide to the activities you carry out.

Its impact helps designs in transcending trends and maintaining relevance. It reduces complexity and turns it into a harmonious and easily understandable design. In essence, simplicity is the key that transforms a design from being merely effective to being powerfully resonant and universally acceptable. Central to the design thinking process is prototyping and testing (more on that later) which allows designers to try, to fail, and to learn what works. Testing also involves customers, and that continued involvement provides essential user feedback on potential designs and use cases.

What Is The Purpose Of A Concept?

For the latter, consider an ideation session that brings key members of the design (and other teams) together to make the problem and solution as concrete as possible. They want the latest tech, and for Siri to automate their entire house. They want glass that doubles as a screen, and they want it all with a dose of social media while driving. We suspect this concept will find its way, in some form, the rest of the world. His predecessor penned crappy concepts, apparently, but Mindt's approach looks like one worth getting excited about.

An Effective Guide to Product Development Strategy

Design is one of the art forms that should impact other people’s lives – it is not just a decorative piece. It should serve a greater purpose that is beneficial for society, or it should beautify a person’s life for the greater good. For this, conduct a thorough study on the project and ask the project manager a lot of questions. Dive deep into the details regarding the concept and gather all the data.

Questions related to design principles

The principles of design in art are foundational concepts that guide the creation and evaluation of artworks, ensuring visual harmony, balance, and cohesion. These principles include balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity/variety. Each principle plays a pivotal role in organizing or arranging the visual elements in a design, ultimately shaping the viewer's experience. This comprehensive resource provides insights into the interconnectedness of design principles in various mediums.

Visual hierarchy places importance on presenting the most vital information at the top. By understanding and applying these principles, designers can create intuitive, aesthetically pleasing, and practical designs that cater to user needs and preferences. You should consider goals such as usability, design coherence, scalability and accessibility part of your design concept. Having these principles in mind throughout the design process will improve your final product. Grasping these elements facilitates the conceptualization process, aiding in the exploration of concept design possibilities while highlighting potential limitations. It is the duty of the conceptual designer to integrate client branding effectively to meet both the client’s and their audience’s expectations.

The mistake they make is to try and empathize, connecting the stated problem only to their own experiences. This falsely leads to the belief that you completely understand the situation. But the actual problem is always broader, more nuanced, or different than people originally assume.

The principles of design aren’t intended to stop you in your creative process and to adhere. They are defined to ensure that whatever you do meets the standards of what brand communication should be. You can stay true to this principle of design by using similar colors, shapes, textures, and elements that appear consistently throughout your communication. It forms the guidelines for designing your most essential and least significant aspects with the help of typography, color, contrast, images, and more. The principle of design used to govern the usage of white spaces comes into play with minimalist designs in a significant way. It can create balance, improve the standard or level of design, and reduce clutter.

If we analyze the entire process, development comes at the end to ensure that our application is well-tested and designed to solve the customer’s problem. Additionally, it de-risks the product team’s effort, capital, and time. Once you’ve comprehended the project’s goals and necessary features, it’s time to give form to your ideas. Low-fidelity sketching on paper is a straightforward way to bring your ideas to life. Conceptualization comes into play as we approach the creation of the first wireframes. Here, we make decisions regarding whether to build upon existing frameworks or start from scratch.

Designers and developers can identify how content will be displayed in the finished product. Those with user or client experience in a marketing or support context may have valuable input, for example.

What's the housing market like in Laguna Niguel?

Not until 1860 was the territory definitively incorporated into France and Italy, with Mont Blanc marking the border. Low-cost airlines that fly to smaller, local French airports combined with rising UK property prices are contributing factors for the surge in interest in the French property market. For some, the chance to own a second home or holiday villa in France is no longer a dream or a right that’s reserved for the rich and famous. As property in France has become more accessible and affordable, many people have looked to invest. Booking accommodation (including hostels and campsites) entitles you to a Carte d'Hote which allows free travel on trains and buses between Servoz and Vallorcine.

Carry a cell phone, switched off to preserve the batteries, though there is no guarantee you'll have a signal in a crisis. The highest peaks, especially Mont Blanc, should not be attempted by people lacking mountain climbing experience and equipment, even using the easiest route (voie royale). Traditional mountaineering was a practical business of hunting and farming, and of leading travellers over the passes by the safest route, tugging their pack-mules through the sleet. In 1760 the scientist Horace Bénédict de Saussure put up a prize for the first ascent of Mont Blanc. In those days the mountain lay in Savoy, an independent country that included Nice, Aosta, Piedmont and Sardinia.

The first three could feasibly be done in one day if you are up early and have a car, but Bionnassay will require a half-day. Jess traveled regularly to NYC, LA and internationally to source and design apparel and home product for 2000+ nationwide stores. She has worked with hundreds of brands including Levi’s, Free People and Ralph Lauren Home. Historically, areas such as the Cote d'Azur and the Dordogne were popular with those looking to step on to the French property ladder. Now people are buying all over the French continent depending on their individual requirements. There are also some who are fortunate to run a business that is not location-dependent, so that they can experience the benefits of living and working in France.

Rather than focusing on a specific era or style, Chamonix sources items with intrinsic value and style from all times - handmade rugs, hand carved furnishings, hand blown glass or designers of note. Chamonix opened as a small antiques store in rural Scituate, Rhode Island where Nick and Jess currently reside with their daughters, Alice and Jane. Design Concept Example: Objective and Principles INK

concept of design

The stages might be switched, conducted concurrently or repeated several times to gain the most informative insights about your users, expand the solution space and hone in on innovative solutions. The elements of visual design make up the fundamental building blocks of a product. Learning how to achieve unity, gestalt, hierarchy, balance, contrast, scale, dominance, and similarity will be extremely useful as you work in visual design. A design concept statement is a short, concise description of a design concept and its purpose. It typically includes the design goals, elements, target audience and the challenges the design team is presently addressing.

Stage 4: Visual Ideation – Concrete Visual Interpretation

Their design should therefore be both neutral and restrained, to leave room for the user’s self-expression. These principles have become iconic and have inspired designers across the world. Dieter Rams, a German industrial designer known for his “less but better” approach to design, attempted to answer these questions.

Stage 3: Ideate—Challenge Assumptions and Create Ideas

These bold and structured forms can communicate stability, power, and assertiveness, making them ideal for designs that target a more professional or assertive context. As a universal language transcending boundaries, design has become an essential skill in our increasingly digital world. Whether you're a budding artist or a creative enthusiast seeking to enhance your skills, learning design basics is a transformative journey that can open doors to limitless possibilities.

Good design makes a product understandable.

Patterns also help establish your brand's presence without displaying your logo design or brand name everywhere. Use this powerful principle of design to bring consistency and a holistic feel to the content you create. White space is also called negative space, as it isn’t always white. It is defined as the blank space deliberately left between objects in a design for aesthetic purposes. White spaces can be miracle workers if used intellectually because they have the power to give your customers visual relief, especially when taking in large portions of information.

The Ultimate Guide to Understanding UX Roles and Which One You Should Go For

Symmetrical design uses an imaginary vertical (or sometimes horizontal) line to divide a design into two halves around a central point. Elements of equal visual weight are balanced on each side of the axis to create symmetry. You might notice that these principles are aimed at product design. Rams worked at Braun, so products were in his wheelhouse, but these principles are easily adapted to UX design, or any other design context. They would go on to inspire generations of designers, including Johnny Ive, the mastermind behind Apple’s most famous products. The number of design principles is not fixed and can vary depending on the source or context.

Be it a logo or software, your design should achieve something practical like describing your brand or sending info – above everything your design must be aesthetically beautiful. Pinpoint the problem a fresh feature will solve before you invest in it. They should know that what they’re looking at can and will change. If they’re not immediately impressed by a concept, be sure to listen to their reasoning. Although there are no generally agreed-upon number of principles in design, seven principles of design are most important to keep in mind.

Design process

The value of design plays a crucial role in establishing unity and cohesion within your work. Often overlooked, value is the connecting thread that combines all aspects of your design, creating a harmonious and visually appealing composition. When used appropriately, white space can prevent your design from appearing crowded or claustrophobic, ensuring the composition feels balanced and inviting. On the other hand, neglecting white space can result in a format that feels overwhelming or difficult to comprehend, diminishing its overall impact. Conversely, curving and smooth shapes such as circles and ovals often elicit a more feminine and gentle response.

Proportion is the relationship between two or more elements in a design, particularly the size and scale of them. When things are "proportionate”, it means there’s a coordination between them that makes the design look aesthetically pleasing. Where objects in real life carry physical weight, elements in design carry visual weight. Large elements are heavier and small elements lighter, with each element having its own "weight" based on how much attention they draw.

What Are Wicked Problems and How Might We Solve Them?

concept of design

Trends may come and go, but individuality and consistency are priceless and critical to achieving success. Most of the time, we go through multiple iterations of the build-measure-learn cycle in which we move from the concept to production-ready design. The digital world offers significant advantages over traditional construction projects, such as building bridges, where mistakes can be costly and difficult to fix. In contrast, digital products can be easily updated and modified, allowing developers to quickly correct any errors or issues that arise during the iterative development process. This means that developers can take risks and experiment with new features and functionality without fear of causing significant damage to the project.

Agile teams continually integrate user feedback into development cycles. Teams often use design thinking and agile methodologies in project management, product development, and software development. These methodologies have distinct approaches but share some common principles. The second, solution-related diamond, begins with “Develop,” where the team brainstorms ideas.

concept of design

It’s a design that should consider technical constraints and cost-of-production limitations. Production-ready design is created on top of the conceptual design. Designers can use many cool tricks and techniques to create effective and engaging interfaces, such as colour, typography, and user-centred design principles. However, it's important to remember that these tricks and techniques should be used with the user's needs and context in mind. Designing a product that looks simple is easy, but simplifying its actual use can be more challenging, mainly when dealing with complex internal systems hidden from the visible part of the interface.

The first stage of the design thinking process focuses on user-centric research. You want to gain an empathic understanding of the problem you are trying to solve. Consult experts to find out more about the area of concern and conduct observations to engage and empathize with your users. You may also want to immerse yourself in your users’ physical environment to gain a deeper, personal understanding of the issues involved—as well as their experiences and motivations.

Be trustworthy and credible – identify yourself through your design to assure users and eliminate the uncertainty. What are some commonly asked questions about the twelve principles of design? Avoid letting your customers to mistake the situation for being redirected to an entirely different brand. This balance between the aspects of creating disruptive variety and a consistent tone is covered in our next point. The associative mind of a customer can link your emailer with the massive signage they saw on your office building and put two-and-two together.

Traditionally, companies begin with feasibility or viability and then try to find a problem to fit the solution and push it to the market. Design thinking reverses this process and advocates that teams begin with desirability and bring in the other two lenses later. Scale can be used to create a hierarchy for and add emphasis to certain elements on a design. Balance is the principle governing how we distribute the elements of a design evenly. Balanced designs tend to appear calm, stable and natural, while imbalanced designs make us feel uneasy.

Guide to Margaritaville At Sea

margarittaville cruise

Once you're in the Bahamas, shore excursions are extra and you will have to pay to take transportation from the terminal in Freeport to any attractions, as there is nothing within walking distance. That being said, on a cruise this short, where you're in port for one of the two days, you're not spending much time in your room anyway. Part of the Jimmy Buffett/Margaritaville vibe is that anything goes, as long as you remain laid back.

Signature Grand Suites

The Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is your easy-breezy resort at sea, with visual accents that inspire adventure. The ship’s inviting atmosphere is filled with music, lights, island-inspired sculptures, artwork, and more. Lovers of non-stop entertainment can enjoy the Margaritaville Casino, Stars on the Water Theater, and various nightclubs while wellness-enthusiasts can stop by the St. Somewhere Spa & Salon or Fins Up!

Margaritaville's new cruise brand will still begin sailing out of Florida in April — see inside its first ship

Our cruise deals and special offers are an irresistible opportunity to lift your spirits and sail off into the sunset. The Margaritaville at Sea Paradise is your easy escape for a Bahamas getaway where there’s always a party in the makin’. Kick back in comfort with live entertainment and performances, drinks by the pool, games of chance at the casino, and delicious food – always ready when you are. Sailing from the Port of Palm Beach, Florida to Freeport, Grand Bahama Island on 2- and 3-night itineraries. The Margaritaville at Sea Islander is the newest flagship resort-at-sea perfectly designed to transport cruisers on a fun-soaked escape to an island state of mind. Sailing June 2024 from Port of Tampa Bay, Florida to Key West and Mexico on 4- and 5-night cruise itineraries.

Easy Escape to Paradise

The new rebranding of this ship comes on the heels of a partnership made between the Margaritacville company and the Florida-based cruise company, the Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line. “We’re excited about this new partnership as we launch Margaritaville At Sea out of the Port of Palm Beach. We’re excited about this new phase of our evolution, rebranding as Margaritaville At Sea,” stated the CEO of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, Oneil Khosa. With this ultimate beverage package, save 35% on 10 alcohol drinks (up to $12) including beer, specialty cocktails, wine, and any cool concoction of your choosing. Chill on your own time with our signature package built for one with five complimentary drinks, $75 spa credit, concierge access, and more.

SET SAIL WITH US

Now you can follow in our wake,” stated the tropical icon and singer-songwriter, Jimmy Buffett. Meet the swimming pigs of The Bahamas, spend the day swimming with dolphins, or work on your tan as you sip a tropical cocktail. Get the most out of your visit on shore by booking a fun-filled excursion. Includes your choice of Margaritaville at Sea souvenir cup plus unlimited refills of fountain sodas for the duration of your cruise. A specialty dining experience for two, tucked away in the cozy oasis of Frank and Lola's Pizzeria. Set your morning to a sparkling start with a fresh, luxurious breakfast from JWB Prime Steakhouse for the ultimate beginning to a fantastic day in paradise.

The License to Chill Bar and 12 Volt Bar are both located on Deck 11, near the pool areas. The 12 Volt Bar is located at the aft (back) of the ship near the adults-only pool area. Keep in touch with friends and family and share your vacation experiences while on board. Upgrade your beverages to ultimate sharable concoctions with a 22 oz signature Blender Cup filled with your favorite Boat Drink. Celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, weekend getaways, and every special occasion. For non-drinkers, the $99 Faster Chill program allows you to skip the check-in madness at the somewhat chaotic Palm Beach Terminal, along with a Wi-Fi package for two and reserved seating at various venues.

If you choose this option, note that you'll have to have a passport, and not just a birth certificate. Which is good, because only 10 rooms on the entire ship come with a balcony. Even junior suites only have portholes; you have to book a Grand Terrace Suite if you want outdoor real estate. Another area where the ship seems dated is in its utilities; the renovation did not add the number of American outlets and USB ports that always-wired travelers want these days. Margaritaville at Sea Islander's only 4-night itinerary features an all-day venture at the tropical island oasis of Cozumel, plus two sun-soaked days at sea. For a limited time, enjoy complimentary Balcony stateroom upgrades for select dates on the all-new Margaritaville at Sea Islander through 2024.

Margaritaville at Sea Paradise Has No Real Dress Code; Come As You Are

Mainly, that entertainment includes the stage show, comedian performances, a piano performance, and live music performances. Each of these entertainment types is offered both nights of the cruise. The Margaritaville brand is quite extensive, and has achieved great success since it opened its first retail location in 1985 in Key West, Florida.

EXPLORE GRAND BAHAMA ISLAND

Discover the charming and eclectic beaches of Key West and the island oasis of Cozumel on the all-new Margaritaville at Sea Islander. Experience the beauty of Grand Bahama with one-of-a-kind experiences that you’ll treasure for years to come – from dolphin encounters to snorkeling and swimming with the pigs.

As is common onboard most cruise ships, the Paradise features many activities throughout the day. There are Sail Away parties, game shows for all members of the family, and live musician performances. The Cruise Director will announce throughout the day when different activities are being held, and where onboard. Additionally, guests can locate a printed ship schedule near the Guest Services desk. In addition to the Tiki Bar, other new bars and lounges include the central lounge in the Flip Flop Atrium serving signature cocktails. Ocean-inspired cocktails will be on the menu in the aquarium-themed Coral Reef Lounge and hand-crafted drinks will be served in the intimate Hemisphere Dancer Craft Spirits Bar.

Our cruise special offers are an irresistible opportunity to sail off into the sunset for an easy-breezy cruise vacation of nonstop fun. The limited-time offer invites registered travel agents to book a personal cruise starting at $40 per person/night. On the Islander, agents can book a Breezy Balcony stateroom or an upper deck oceanview stateroom on the Paradise.

Guests can participate in games such as Blackjack, Roulette, and Ultimate Texas Hold Em’. There is a main pool located on Deck 11 at the middle of the ship, this pool is open to all guests. This pool area is also where many activities are held, such as the Sail Away Parties.

The 10-passenger deck cruise ship has since undergone a "multi-million investment and refurbishment" to fit the Margaritaville brand. The entertainment lineup includes two new scripted live production shows, along with two theme nights, poolside activities and music. This package costs $25 and covers both days of the cruise, about 48 hours of coverage. Signal strength is sufficient for most of the cruise, however, it does take a while for things to load and send. Margaritaville At Sea offers three different drink packages to chose from onboard.

Margaritaville At Sea has several sales on offer to prospective guests. For example, one of their most notable sales is the Heroes Sail Free promotion. This sale takes off the price of the cruise, and makes It so that guests who qualify as service members and first responders, only pay the port taxes, fees, fuel charge, and gratuities.

Just Back From Celestyal Discovery

celestyal cruise

There is no central atrium- everything is scattered on the top 3 decks and minimal, but there are only 1200 passengers so it was mostly manageable. The Celestyal Discovery is a mid-sized vessel, allowing Celestyal to continue offering its signature unique blend of marquee destinations and more secluded gems that characterize the company’s itineraries. Discovery has four dining venues, the main two dining rooms being Thalassa Restaurant and The Taverna which are free of charge. Lunch service is pretty identical between the two, both offering a solid buffet of around a dozen stations most of which varied daily and always included Greek specialities.

Athens

In the summer months, the ship sees a large number of passengers from North America -- particularly families with teenage kids and groups of young students. Overall, lovingly worn Celestyal Crystal might not be the prettiest or most innovative ship on the high seas, but it offers arguably the best bang for your buck when it comes to cruising in Greece. However, its time sailing for Celestyal ends in September 2023, when it will be replaced by a much bigger ship -- Celestyal Journey -- which is almost double the size and has one of the key things Crystal is missing -- balcony cabins. Cruise Critic is not a booking agent and does not charge any service fees to users of our site. When you book with one of our partners, please be sure to check their site for a full disclosure of all applicable fees as required by the U.S. Celestyal requires a smart dress code in the dining rooms -- no shorts or flip-flops for men and smart dresses or nice pants and blouses for women.

Iconic Aegean Summer - 4 Nights

An excursion to the Ancient city of Ephesus from the Turkish port of Kusadasi and the Palace of Knossos in Crete are two sites worth reserving a tours of. I opted to explore Santorini and Mykonos on my own, taking in the beautiful views (of the former) and lively shops and nightlife (of the latter). While there's no water slides or go-karting track, Deck 12 is reserved for kids 5 to 12 years old. The Turtle Cave club offers artistic and educational games while the Shark club shows English cartoons and television shows.

Celestyal Journey's Itineraries Will Focus on Greece and the Mediterranean

Kids under the age of three must be accompanied by an adult—currently, no babysitting is offered on board. I found the cruise to be popular among groups of friends in their sixties and upwards, as well as mothers and daughters looking to spend quality time together. As a Greek company, Celestyal also attracts local families who are keen to explore their own backyard in an environment where they’re well catered. Starting and finishing in Athens, the seven-night “Idyllic Aegean” sailing stops at Thessaloniki, Kusadasi (Turkey), Heraklion (Crete), and the Greek islands of Santorini, Mykonos, and Milos. The cruise line's emphasis on the destination and its budget-friendly price tag make it an excellent value, even more so when you see its nearly all-inclusive.

Celestyal Cruises

Its restaurants range from Mediterranean dining in the Thalassa restaurant to restaurants specifically reserved for those occupying suites; the Smoked Olive and Pink Moon. Both these restaurants offer the same menu choice as Thalassa, with additional options of Mediterranean bites at Smoked Olive and Asian cuisine at the Pink Moon. Although Celestyal Journey is a traditional cruise ship, when it begins sailing for Celestyal it will be the youngest and most modern ship in the fleet. Celestyal Crystal and Celestyal Olympia were launched in 1980 and 1981 respectively and as older ships have few balcony cabins.

Onboard, our guests get to enjoy a more cosy, homely atmosphere and a less crowded affair and therefore the highest standards of customer care, comfort and personalized service. Celestyal's mainly short, port-intensive itineraries don't leave much time for onboard activities, but they stick as closely as possible to the traditional cruise format. Cruises attract a wide, multilingual spectrum of passengers to Greek itineraries. Our view is if you want to see a lot of the islands in just a few days and enjoy an authentic Greek experience, Celestyal Olympia is excellent value for both your time and money.

Our lavish new spa offers guests the opportunity to spend the day doing what they love most. With bigger and better facilities, exercise lovers have everything they need to start their day right. In 1999 Louis chartered the 1998-acquired SS Ausonia to First Choice Holidays, one of Thomson's competitors in the UK market. Also in 1999, Louis acquired a stake in the Greece-based Royal Olympic Cruises. Royal Olympic was already in difficulties by the time Louis became involved with the company, and the 11 September 2001 attacks dealt a further blow, finally leading to the collapse of Royal Olympic in 2004. No, but the fare does include at least two shore excursions per cruise, gratuities and unlimited but select alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks, per the included beverage package guidelines.

Iconic Aegean - 4 Nights

For the first time ever, we’re proud to bring you the Stargazer Suite — a penthouse suite with a private terrace made for special moments. Whatever your choice of drink, our 8 new bars offer a diverse selection of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. Grab a beer and catch one of our dazzling daily shows in the  ΘEATRO, soak up the electric atmosphere of the Ble Bar and Lounge, or head down to our Martini Bar and enjoy one of our exclusive Signature Cocktails. Fresh towels and toiletries are delivered twice a day and your personal steward is on hand to deliver room service 24/7. All our cabins have adjustable air-conditioning, a hairdryer, a safe and TV. There’s an impressive seven bars on board, each with unique décor, though still keeping with the 1920s vibe.

When we booked, it was for the Olympia, but were notified in December that it would instead be on the Discovery, a refurbished 20 year-old ship that had until recently been cruising the Baltic. They don't use Piraeus but instead use Lavrion, a smaller ferry port that requires an hour taxi ride from Athens. That was not a big issue- we had a fantastic driver named Spiros and he kept us entertained the entire way. Upon arrival at Lavrion, we encountered the worst embarkation setup we'd ever seen. Mostly outside with 30 mph winds, Celestyal's organization was almost non-existent.

When eating in the Taverna buffet, you can't help but notice the impressive melon carvings—some of faces, others of various nature or sea scenes. These are created by the onboard sculptor whose creates beautiful sculptures from various materials, a skill passed down through family generations. Check the daily itinerary, left in your room nightly, to watch the art come to life. On the Journey's first stop in Thessaloniki, Greece’s second largest city, I took an immersive tour that left me yearning to return.

Choose from a quiet coffee bar, the Blue piano Bar and Lounge, or head to the Fizz Club if you’re a lover of cocktails and champagne. The Grapevine has an impressive selection of wine choices for the connoisseurs among you. The Compass is reserved for occupants of the Grand Dream and Stargazer Suites. The Coral was scrapped in late 2013, and theLouis Crista was charted to Cuba Cruises, but still operating under the Louis brand. All Louis ships will receive a Louis Cruises logo on their white hall, along with a red and blue stripe next to it.

A step above these is the 377-square-foot Grand Dream Suite on Deck 10 with 2 lower beds, a double sofa bed, a panoramic window, balcony, a spacious bathroom, and a dressing room. There are dozens of various suite categories on the Journey, spread across Decks 9 and 10. The Junior Dream Suites A, B, and C categories all have floor to ceiling sliding doors to their balconies and can sleep up to three people across twin beds and a sofa bed. At 226 square feet, my category B Junior Dream suite on Deck 9 was more than comfortable. From the elaborate monument of Athens to the clifftop village of Oia and the charming medieval city of Rhodes, Greece and the Greek Island cruise Vacations of any length leave you dreaming of your next visit.

Whether you choose a cozy interior cabin or a spacious suite, the Celestyal Discovery offers a range of accommodation to suit every preference, guaranteeing a restful and rejuvenating stay. At the heart of it all is our commitment to our exceptional award winning service. Our dedicated staff are passionate about creating an unforgettable experience for each and every guest, ensuring your wellbeing is our utmost priority. From the moment you step foot onboard, you’ll be enveloped in an atmosphere of warmth, luxury, and attentive care.

Well-trained specialists treat you in one of seven treatment rooms, including a couple's room. I personally loved finding a quiet hide away (which was never difficult) and sipping my signature cocktail as I watched the sea go by. A casual breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet is served on the upper deck at the Taverna. Guests can purchase regional ice creams at the Fig and Honey and Greek fast food such as souvlaki from the Greek Deli. The pièce de résistance is the 947-square-foot Stargazer Exterior Penthouse Suite on Deck 10 with space for up to three guests. Both the Stargazer Suite and Grand Dreams’ have exclusive access to Rays, a secluded sunbathing and relaxation area—plus the Compass Lounge for private drinks.

I'd also recommend booking the group tour of the smaller island of Milos, as it's less suited for solo exploration. Visit Sarakiniko beach, a famed moonscape of pure white stone, the ancient village of Plaka, and the Christian catacombs. The ship's 613 crew members took the time to greet every passenger by name and were always on-hand for any query.

Greek-owned line Celestyal Cruises purchased the 1,260-passenger vessel Celestyal Journey, to replace the oldest ship in its fleet, Celestyal Crystal, from September 2023. Constructed at Italy's Fincantieri shipyard in 1993, it first sailed for Holland America Line as Ryndam, one of the line's Statendam or S-class ships. From 2015, it operated as Pacific Aria for P&O Cruises Australia, and in 2019, P&O announced the sale of the ship to Cruise & Maritime Voyages (CMV) which renamed it Ida Pfeiffer, however the line collapsed during the pandemic.
